How Do Axial Fans Work?

Axial or Centrifugal?

An axial fan has a propeller which sucks air in and then propels it outward. However, a centrifugal fan works with a rotating wheel with slots or impellers. It is often called a squirrel cage fan and these fans are very common in HVAC blower systems.

To increase airflow in an axial fan, one needs to speed up the rotation of the propeller. Also, speeding up the wheel rotation in a centrifugal fan will increase airflow.

There are several axial fan types. For example, when an axial fan is located in a tube or duct it is referred to as tubeaxial fan. These fans see many uses in industrial applications as they can withstand high temperatures and corrosive environment. The tubeaxial fan can be used in large commercial and industrial applications and can be staged in series. Plus, they are also utilized in the electronics industry for many cooling fan applications.

Hi Temp Axial Fans

For very high temperature environments, special fans capable of delivering high amounts of air are used and they can be uni-directional or bi-directional. Hi temp axial fans are extremely durable and capable of withstanding temperatures as high as 980 degrees Celsius (1800 degrees Fahrenheit).

Vaneaxial Fans

The vaneaxial fan is similar to the duct or tubeaxial fan. Special guide vanes are designed to recapture energy used from the fan and recycle it. This creates a great deal more pressure.

Adjustable Blade Axial Fans

These fans are designed so the angle of the blades can be changed or adjusted. This allows for changing conditions and can either increase pressure or air volume dramatically.

Propeller or axial fans have many benefits over other fan types. For example, the weight to capacity is very high and their design makes them easy to install in duct systems. They deliver both high efficiency and performance.
