Ratchet Tie Down Straps: The Basics

by | Mar 31, 2017 | Cranes and Hoists

Moving a load creates serious concerns. No matter what size the vehicle is, securing it becomes paramount. Fear of losing items or the load shifting requires considering means of securing the items so no accident or issue can occur. Ratchet tie down straps is one way to handle the problem. They are capable of restraining even the largest loads. At the same time, they are light and portable.

Tie Down Straps

Tie down straps are straps for tying down items. In general, they are flat, long pieces of durable material. A ratchet tie down strap is a variation that includes a ratcheting mechanism. This “ratchets-up” or tightens the strap, adjusting its capabilities to handle the demands of specific loads.

Ratchet straps tend to be composed of nylon. This restricts them from stretching extensively producing the right tension for safely conveying goods. The width of the material is also an important factor in determining the weight ratchet tie down straps can contain securely. They come in four different sizes – one to four inches. Check to see which weight each will contain. Also, look at the specific hooks that come with them.

The Hooks for Ratchet Tie Down Straps

A ratchet tie down comes with two different types of hooks. Each serves a specific purpose. The hook types are:

  1. The Flat Hook: If you have a flatbed trailer, you will probably use this type of hook with your tie down. The edge of this trailer features a lip running around the bed. This easily accommodates the flat hook type
  1. The J-Hook: If you have a small trailer, or want to secure a load on a pickup truck, this is the hook. The J hook can fit into smaller holes than a flat hook can.

Consider hooks, width, and all other factors before purchasing the right ratchet tie down straps to secure your load safely.
