Choosing The Right Roofing Material For Your Home

by | Oct 19, 2016 | Construction and Maintenance

There are a number of different roofing materials available, each of which has its own pros and cons. This is good, having different options available makes it much easier for a homeowner to decide which roof is best for them based on their own needs be it budget, style, longevity, etc.

It stands to reason that lower priced roofing in San Antonio will not last as long as more expensive options. The big balancing act for most homeowners is finding the optimum product, one that meets both of these characteristics.

When you think “roofing,” actually you should think “roofing system.” What people think of as the roof is invariably that which they see, there is also the roof sheathing, flashing and underlay, all of which are necessary to ensure a solid, leak free, trouble free roof.

   * Asphalt shingles:

Asphalt shingles are by far the most common roofing product. This roofing is a combination of backing material, often fiberglass, asphalt and mineral granules. Asphalt shingles are quick and easy to install and are inexpensive to purchase.

   * Wood shingles:

Wood shingles have been popular as roofing in San Antonio for many years, they continue to this day to be an excellent choice of material. Wood shingles are made from cedar, Cyprus or redwood. Over the years they develop a lovely patina, they are beautiful when used with a steep pitched roof where they are most visible.

   * Clay or concrete tile:

You will go a long way to find a roofing material that is more durable than clay or concrete tile. Although they are very long lasting, they are also heavy and the roof structure may have to be reinforced which is a consideration. This type of roofing is inherently fire proof and is good at keeping the interior of the home cool.

There are a number of things to consider before you choose your roofing material. Is it a new home or are you’re replacing an existing roof, how long are you planning to stay in your home, any large trees over the roof, architectural styles and colors are but a few things to take into account.

Determining the roofing that is best suited for your home takes some thinking. There are a number of viable options, some better than others depending on what is important to you. For further information on roofing in San Antonio you are invited to contact Shaw Company Remodeling.
