Dating is already complicated enough. Add kids to the mix and things get even more interesting. If you’re dating a single mom, here are nine things you’ll need to know first:
The kids will always come first
That’s non-negotiable. If you want to make a commitment to a single parent, then you’re going to need to factor that in, the Cosmopolitan says.
Know when to ask
You like kids. But liking them is different from raising them. Don’t try to act like you know everything there is to know about raising and living with kids simply because you love playing with your nephew for an hour or two.
Take things slow
Single parents have a ton of responsibilities so jumping into a relationship is usually the furthest thing on their mind. You’ll need to be ready to take things slow.
Be flexible
Having kids often means she’ll cancel on your date to watch over a sick kid. Be flexible about schedules then.
Let her sleep in
Moms with kids often have little sleep. Instead of taking her out on singles dates much too often, impress her by running herd on the kids and letting her sleep in.
She’ll be distracted
If the divorce is still ongoing, then expect her to be distant at times. It’s hard to go through the dissolution of a marriage so give her the time and space she needs.
She’s often busy
Taking care of kids is hard work. She’ll often be busy.
She might have low self-esteem
If she’s been in a bad relationship before, her self-esteem might be down in the dumps. Do your best to make her realize her worth and regain her self-esteem.
Love her kids
It’s a package deal: if you love her, then you’ll have to love her kids as well.
