The use of different natural plant products, including various compounds extracted from plants, is definitely not new. In fact, some of the oldest civilizations used specific plants for everything from managing headaches and speeding up healing to helping to reduce or eliminate chronic and acute pain.
The use of CBD pain relief products actually dates back to ancient China, in and around 2700 BC. This included the Emperor Sheng Nung taking a tea that was made from cannabis infused with other herbs to treat pain and inflammation from would now be diagnosed as gout and rheumatism.
In 1839, cannabis was studied as an anesthetic by Irish doctor William O’Shaughnessy. In 1940 and 1942 respectively, a British chemist Robert S. Cahn and an American Chemist, Roger Adams, actually isolated CBD, with Adams also isolating THC.
How it Works
Once scientists had isolated the cannabidiol (CBD), it was possible to see how it works within the body systems. Each human has an ECS or endocannabinoid system in their body. This system was not discovered until 1992 by Dr. Ralph Mechoulam, who also discovered the psychoactive properties of THC.
Using CBD pain relief products supplies CBD compounds to the body that binds to the receptors of the ECS. It can also bind to receptors in the central nervous system that helps to enhance the production and the use of serotonin; a feel good chemical in the brain. This same chemical is also linked to the healing of tissues, reducing anxiety, and helping the body deal with pain.
Different options in CBD pain relief products can be used to create the ideal combination for each patient. Keep in mind, CBD offers no psychoactive components, so there is no “high” experienced when using these products.
