Lubricant Additive Packages: Definition, Description and Applications

Keeping machinery running smoothly is essential in all industries. When it comes to protecting engines and other mechanical devices from a variety of issues, industries turn to lubricant additives. Packages of these chemical substances are relied upon to imbue, introduce or heighten certain properties of base oil.

What Are Lubricant Additives?

A lubricant additive is a chemical component or blend added to the base oil. It intends to introduce to or augment the existing lubricating properties. The additive may also be used to reduce any qualities in the base oil that might interfere with lubricating capabilities. The purpose of these chemicals – singly or as part of an additive package is to provide lubrication to the selected mechanical components including engines and motors. They perform the following tasks:

  • Cleaning
  • Cooling
  • Lubricating
  • Sealing

To achieve any of these goals, it must be added at the correct ratio of additive per fuel. i.e., the “treat rate.”

What Are Lubricant Additive Packages?

Additive packages are a combination of various additives selected to provide specific effects. They are usually custom-made. In the case of lubricant additives, the combination is complementary to the base oil and each additive. These substances are selected carefully to meet the specific demands of each customer while satisfying the requirements of the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and any environmental regulations.


Additives are used in a variety of base oils, fluids and greases. Lubricant additive packages are intended to provide the right amount of lubrication for:
