Friction Modifier Additive: Anti-Wear Additive Light

by | Jun 26, 2023 | Business

When two surfaces rub against each other, friction is generated. If you want to decrease the amount generated, you add lubricant. In many cases, the base oil is not sufficient to prevent the destruction this action can cause. To augment the fluid’s ability, the industry introduces a friction modifier additive.

Application of Friction Modifier Additives

A friction modifier additive performs a simple role – it adjusts the coefficient of friction. Acting as an anti-wear additive, it minimizes the wear that results from two metallic components of a machine rubbing against each other. The additive actively and effectively cushions both sliding and rolling motions.

However, the concentration of friction modifiers, commonly known as Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP), will vary depending on the type of duty cycle and application. In cases where both the loading and metallic contact increase, extreme pressure (EP) chemicals such as those that are sulfur-phosphorus based are commonly implemented.

Friction Modifier Additives

When mineral oils are used alone, they are not as effective at reducing friction and its related problems. They require the help of a friction modifier additive. By employing them, the machinery operates more efficiently. Reducing friction results in decreased wear on the equipment and less downtime.
