Different Types of Metal Roofing

by | Jun 21, 2018 | Roofing

One of the newer trends in residential roofing is the use of metal instead of traditional shingles, and it’s easy to understand why if you know the details. Metal roofing has a number of distinct advantages over more conventional roofing styles. It’s lightweight, far more durable than most roofing materials, and will save you money in the long run. There’s more to it than just choosing to go with metal for your roof, however. There are a number of different types of metal that metal roofing contractors can install on your home. Here’s a rundown of the major options available to you for metal roofs.

Aluminum
Aluminum is one of the most consistent and straightforward options that are available for your home. As a material, it’s extremely lightweight, and easy to deal with. It won’t rust or show much wear and tear over time, although, as the material is quite thin, it can be susceptible to damage from physical impact, like hail. Aluminum is also a more energy-efficient option than other roofing materials. In terms of cost, relative to other roofing types, aluminum is in the middle of the road, not the most expensive option, but not the least either.

Steel
Steel is generally going to be the cheapest option you can go with for your metal roof. It’s the thickest and heaviest option, so it’s extremely resistant to physical damage. The big drawback with steel is that it can corrode, and will probably need to be replaced sooner than other types of roofs. In addition, it’s a bit more aesthetically dull than other options, which can give your home a bit of an industrial look. Generally, to ward off the elements as best as possible, steel will be galvanized, but for a bit more money, you can get galvalume steel, a form of steel that is more corrosion resistant than regular steel.

Copper
Copper is generally considered the luxury option for metal roofing, and for good reason. Out of all available options for metal roofing, copper is by far the most expensive. You get what you’re paying for, though, which means that copper roofs are some of the best metal roofs you can by. Not only are they aesthetically gorgeous, the material is extremely resistant to all kinds of damage from the elements. In addition, the material is generally pretty lightweight, and all around easy to work with.
